Global macro investment management and applied AI research

Bridgewater Associates

Bridgewater Associates is a global macro investment firm that manages portfolios and produces economic research for institutional investors. It invests across liquid stock, bond, currency and commodity markets worldwide, tailoring portfolios to clients’ risk and return objectives. Its investment process combines human judgment with computerized systems for testing and applying ideas about how economies work.

Ray Dalio founded Bridgewater in 1975. The firm completed the transfer of control from Dalio to its next generation of leadership in 2022; Nir Bar Dea is its CEO. Bridgewater’s systematic approach turns investment principles into algorithms, tests them against historical cases, and uses the resulting systems alongside human decisions about which positions to hold. Making the reasoning explicit lets investors test an idea across different countries and periods rather than rely only on recent experience.

Bridgewater’s investment approaches include Pure Alpha, which combines investment positions intended to generate returns that do not move together, and All Weather, its approach to risk-parity investing. Both feature in the firm’s history of systematic portfolio construction, which emphasizes designing portfolios around a desired level of risk rather than pursuing the highest possible return.

AIA Labs and investment research

AIA Labs is Bridgewater’s AI research and investment lab. It aims to build an artificial investor capable of matching or exceeding expert human performance across investors’ activities, while also developing tools for human researchers. The work extends Bridgewater’s longstanding use of computers to apply human-generated investment reasoning: language models can also investigate news and other unstructured information, rather than work only with already-codified rules.

  • Pocket Analyst Tool (PAT): Bridgewater’s automated research analyst combines codified investment knowledge, large language models and agent workflows to support exploratory investment research. It incorporates investor feedback to improve its responses.
  • AIA Forecaster: The lab’s November 2025 technical report describes agents that independently search news and produce forecasts. A supervisor investigates disagreements with further searches, then statistical calibration adjusts the final probabilities to counter the models’ tendency to hedge toward 50%. The report found performance statistically indistinguishable from human superforecasters on ForecastBench. On the more challenging MarketLiquid benchmark, the system trailed prediction-market consensus, although combining its forecasts with market prices improved on consensus alone.

AIA Labs also develops research tools and insights for Pure Alpha, with feedback from experienced investors informing its AI development. Bridgewater says its AI systems manage billions of dollars in live markets; building a fully artificial investor remains the lab’s stated ambition.
