Windsurf

Windsurf builds AI coding tools for software developers and engineering teams, now within Cognition, which acquired it in 2025. Its editor continues as Devin Desktop, introduced in 2026. The product combines a full IDE with an Agent Command Center for managing local and cloud agents, pull requests, and codebase context. Developers can delegate tasks, review progress, and edit code themselves. Spaces lets related agents share context, while Agent Client Protocol support lets teams run compatible agents alongside Devin.

Founded in 2021 by Varun Mohan and Douglas Chen, the business began as Exafunction, focused on GPU utilization, before pivoting to Codeium’s AI developer tools in 2022. Former Windsurf leader Jeff Wang is now Cognition’s President of New Enterprise. Its engineering approach includes Fast Context, a code-search subagent powered by SWE-grep models. Trained through multi-turn reinforcement learning, these models search in parallel and return relevant files and line ranges, limiting irrelevant material passed to the main coding agent.

By July 2026, Cognition reported more than $500 million in revenue run rate and 350 employees for the combined business. Earlier that year, the parent company raised over $1 billion at a $26 billion valuation. These figures describe Cognition’s broader business, rather than standalone Windsurf.
