Bio, Work & Ideas
Louis Walsh
Louis Walsh is a Forward Deployed Engineer at Exa in San Francisco and the developer of Exa for Shopping, a browser extension that uses Exa’s search API to bring price comparisons, retailer alternatives, and independent reviews to shoppers considering a product.
Louis studied computer science and economics at Wake Forest and previously worked at Deutsche Bank, Boomy, and Verily. His personal site lists those affiliations; his announcement of joining Exa describes moving from Verily to Exa and from Raleigh, where he had spent six years, to San Francisco. Alongside his engineering career, he coached youth basketball in Raleigh and tutored students remotely in Spanish during the pandemic.
Bringing outside information into shopping
Exa provides web search and content retrieval for AI applications. Exa for Shopping applies that infrastructure to a specific decision: whether to buy the item already open in a shopper’s browser.
The extension detects products on retail websites and analyzes them in the background through the Exa API. When opened, it brings together product details, alternatives from other retailers, price comparisons, and third-party reviews and discussions. Its product comparison workflow starts with the shopper’s existing selection and gathers outside information around it, reducing the need to search separately for each retailer or review.
