AI business automation
Adept
Adept developed AI technology for automating business functions. The San Francisco startup’s technology also became the subject of a licensing arrangement with Amazon, giving the larger company access to some of Adept’s work.
Cofounder and CEO David Luan left Adept for Amazon in 2024 alongside several other cofounders and employees. Adept named a replacement CEO. By June 2024, the startup had raised more than $410 million in funding and was valued above $1 billion.
The Amazon arrangement combined hiring with non-exclusive technology licensing, rather than an outright acquisition. Adept said in June 2024 that it would continue operating independently, and Amazon said about 20 employees remained at the startup. The licensing terms were not disclosed.
