Akamai

Akamai provides cloud computing, cybersecurity and content delivery infrastructure for enterprises and developers. Akamai Cloud offers CPU and GPU compute, storage, managed Kubernetes, databases and serverless functions for running applications and AI workloads across cloud and edge locations. Its security portfolio includes Guardicore Segmentation, which maps application dependencies and uses AI to recommend communication policies. Security teams can apply granular controls across servers, containers and hybrid environments to limit attackers’ movement between workloads.

Founded in 1998 by Tom Leighton and Danny Lewin, Akamai grew out of MIT research on algorithms for routing and replicating web content across distributed servers. Leighton served as chief scientist before becoming CEO in 2013. That distributed approach also informs Akamai Inference Cloud: its AI Grid orchestration, introduced in 2026, routes inference workloads across edge, regional and core infrastructure spanning more than 4,400 locations, matching requests to compute resources based on latency, cost and performance requirements.

Akamai reported $4.2 billion in annual revenue in 2025, including $2.2 billion from security, now the majority of its business. In July 2026, it completed its acquisition of LayerX, following an approximately $205 million acquisition agreement. LayerX adds browser security and AI usage controls that work with enterprises’ existing browsers, giving security teams visibility into web interactions, prompts, uploads and SaaS use.
