Multiplayer game engines and development tools
Ambient
Ambient developed an open-source multiplayer game engine for developers building, deploying and sharing games across web and desktop platforms. Powered by Rust, WebAssembly and WebGPU, its runtime combined graphics rendering, asset pipelines and networking. Developers could assemble experiences from reusable packages containing code, assets and data schemas, then share those packages for others to build on.
Founded by Tobias Enholm and Fredrik Norén, the Swedish company built a technical approach around an entity component system that served as a real-time game database. Networked components synchronized automatically across clients, letting developers concentrate on server and client logic. Packages communicated through shared schemas, while WebAssembly isolated each package’s code. These mechanisms supported combining separately developed functionality within a multiplayer experience.
The business evolved from the closed-source Dims game creation platform into Ambient, then pursued AI game development through Braindump. A late-2024 wind-up decision called for wrapping up the company and returning money to investors; completed dissolution and repayment are not established. Ambient’s official repository states that runtime development is paused indefinitely, so its documented capabilities describe the historical project rather than an actively developed service.
