Banking, Payments & Financial Technology

Capital One

Capital One provides credit cards, consumer and commercial banking, auto lending, and payment networks for individuals and businesses. Its primary markets are the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. The company reported $673.8 billion in total assets as of June 30, 2026. Its banking technology runs entirely in the public cloud, using proprietary data and analytics to support its financial services.

Co-founders Richard D. Fairbank and Nigel Morris built the business around an information-based approach to consumer lending. Fairbank remains chairman and CEO, having led the company since its 1994 initial public offering; Morris previously served as president and chief operating officer. Capital One also developed Cloud Custodian, launched in 2016: an open-source rules engine that lets organizations define policies to automate cloud governance, security, compliance and resource efficiency. Its contribution to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation was approved in 2020.

Capital One completed its acquisition of Discover in 2025, adding proprietary payment networks alongside banking and credit-card operations, with closing-date purchase consideration of $51.8 billion. Its completed 2026 acquisition of Brex expanded its business payments offering for approximately $4.5 billion in consideration. Brex lets businesses issue corporate cards, automate expense management and make real-time payments.
