Self-hosted development environments and AI coding infrastructure
Coder
Coder builds an open-source, self-hosted platform for development environments and AI coding agents. Platform teams define workspaces with Terraform templates on customer-chosen infrastructure, including virtual machines, Kubernetes pods and containers. Developers connect through familiar editors such as VS Code and JetBrains or through SSH, while platform teams manage workspace configuration and access centrally. Ammar Bandukwala, Kyle Carberry and John Andrew Entwistle began building Coder in 2017 to make remote collaboration easier and reduce the repeated setup problems that slow development teams.
Coder Agents extends that workspace foundation to delegated coding and research. Developers describe a task, and the system can select an authorized template, provision a workspace and execute the work. Its own agent loop runs in the Coder control plane, sending requests to a configured model provider and dispatching file operations and shell commands over the connection already used by developer tools. Model credentials remain outside the workspace, which needs neither an agent harness nor access to model APIs. Platform teams can therefore restrict workspace network access while retaining AI functionality; developers still use their editors to review and finish the agent’s work.
Coder’s paid governance tools also support organizations using other coding agents. AI Gateway centralizes authentication and records prompts, token usage and tool calls, including for clients outside Coder workspaces. Agent Firewall applies process-level network policies to terminal-based agents and streams allow-or-deny audit records to the control plane. These enterprise workflows extend beyond software engineers: in April 2026, Coder reported that customer Qube Research & Technologies had deployed Coder to half of its more than 2,000 employees, including engineers, data scientists and analysts.
