Reactive database and backend platform

Convex

Convex provides a backend platform for developers building applications, including those coding with AI agents. It combines a reactive database, TypeScript functions, search and file storage, letting teams store application data, execute backend logic and keep interfaces synchronized as data changes. Convex Components package schemas, functions and data into isolated building blocks with explicit APIs. Convex for Enterprise adds dedicated deployments, single sign-on, audit logging and service agreements alongside its serverless offerings.

Founded in 2021 by former Dropbox infrastructure engineers, Convex’s co-founders include CEO Jamie Turner, CTO James Cowling and Sujay Jayakar. Its technical approach brings application functions directly into the database: queries and mutations execute as serializable transactions. The sync engine tracks which data each query reads, reruns affected queries after changes and pushes updated results to clients. Sandboxed, deterministic JavaScript execution supports transaction retries and precise subscriptions, integrating database consistency with live application updates.

In April 2026, the company reported nearly 10,000 paying teams; enterprise-plan customers included Conduit, doxy.me and Reducto. By August, it reported millions of production instances and dozens of companies on Enterprise plans. Convex raised a $57 million Series B led by Insight Partners in 2026, with participation from Etna Labs, Spark Capital, a16z and Justin Kan.

Messages from the stage

Coordinating a live telephone assistant

Redman's workshop covers real-time transcript streaming, call-context tracking, and generated voice introductions, combining Convex with speech recognition, OpenAI, Twilio, and an Express server.

Reactive state for multistep workflows

Turner describes how subscribable queries and mutations synchronize application state, then introduces built-in vector indexes and reusable Convex Components for stateful backend workflows.
