Early-stage venture capital
CRV is a venture capital firm that finances early-stage technology companies, leading seed and Series A rounds. It backs technical founders across AI, cybersecurity, developer tools, infrastructure and consumer technology. Alongside capital, the firm helps founders make hiring decisions, reach customers and develop their companies. Its investments include CodeRabbit, which provides AI code review, and Outtake, which applies AI to cybersecurity.
Founded in 1970 as Charles River Ventures, CRV counts Richard M. Burnes Jr. among its co-founders; he is now a partner emeritus. Its current investing partnership includes general partner Reid Christian. Partners take board seats and work directly with founders. That involvement can extend across multiple financing rounds: CRV led Vercel’s Series A and also backed its Series B, C, D and E rounds.
CRV’s CRV XX fund completed its final closing in 2025 with $750 million in limited-partner commitments, designated for early-stage and Series A investments. In 2026, the firm reported having backed more than 750 companies early in their development, including DoorDash, Mercury and Vercel, with more than 80 portfolio companies having attained public-company status.
