Unlock Agent Autonomy: The Runtime for AI-Native Systems

Container development and AI agent infrastructure
Docker builds tools for developers and enterprises to package, build and run applications across computing environments. Its container images bundle application code with dependencies, while Docker Desktop brings containers and the development workflow onto developers’ machines. The platform also supports AI agents: Docker Sandboxes isolates agent sessions in microVMs with network and filesystem controls, and Docker AI Governance manages sandbox and MCP policies with identity-bound audit logs. Docker Hardened Images provides minimal, signed, continuously patched images and MCP servers.
Docker began as Dotcloud, founded by Solomon Hykes, Kamel Founadi and Sebastien Pahl, and reinvented itself as Docker in 2013. Don Johnson is its current CEO. Docker Engine built on existing container primitives to separate application dependencies from infrastructure; containers share an operating-system kernel rather than requiring an operating system per application. Docker contributed its image specification and runtime code, now called runc, to the Open Container Initiative in 2015. In 2019, Mirantis acquired the Docker Enterprise Platform business, while Docker retained its focus on Desktop and Hub.
In 2026, Docker reported more than 20 million developers building on Docker daily and more than 20 billion monthly pulls on Docker Hub. Its historical financing includes a $105 million Series C led by Bain Capital Ventures in 2022 at a $2.1 billion valuation. At that time, Docker reported more than 56,000 commercial customers.
