Founded in 2005 by Robert Kalin, Chris Maguire, Haim Schoppik, and Jared Tarbell, Etsy is headquartered in Brooklyn, New York. Kruti Patel Goyal serves as CEO and President, having held senior leadership roles at Etsy since 2011. Its engineering work includes a mature-content classifier that uses text and image recognition to identify potentially mature listings and keep those listings from being displayed to shoppers who are not seeking them.

The company reported approximately 86.5 million active buyers and 5.6 million active sellers at the end of 2025, alongside $10.5 billion in Etsy marketplace gross merchandise sales that year. Its corporate scope has since narrowed: Etsy completed the sale of fashion resale marketplace Depop to eBay on July 30, 2026, receiving approximately $1.4 billion in cash, including purchase-price adjustments and interest.
