GEICO

GEICO is an insurance group that insures private and commercial vehicles and helps customers obtain homeowners, renters and business coverage. GEICO Insurance Agency places some policies with affiliated and unaffiliated insurers, each responsible for its own products. As of April 2026, GEICO reported more than 29,000 employees and served a wide range of customers. GEICO at a Glance

Leo and Lillian Goodwin founded the Government Employees Insurance Company in 1936, marketing auto insurance directly to federal employees and certain military personnel. Lillian marketed the company while also handling accounting, rates and underwriting. GEICO later expanded its customer base and became a wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway in 1996. GEICO history

GEICO's website launched in 1995, allowing customers to request a quote online and receive it by mail five days later. Real-time online quotes followed in 1998, online policy purchases in 2001, and mobile quoting and purchasing in 2010.

Today, customers can use GEICO's claims tools to report an incident, upload photos and documents, and track progress. For covered repairs, they can choose a shop or use GEICO's Auto Repair Xpress network, which can coordinate a repair appointment and rental reservation; rental coverage varies by policy.
