AI research and agent development tools

Imbue

Imbue builds tools for an open agent ecosystem in which people can understand, modify, and verify their agents. Its developer tools include Sculptor, an extensible workspace for parallel coding agents; Blueprint, a planning copilot; and Latchkey, a credential layer for local agents. Developers can also use mngr to run coding agents in parallel and Vet to catch their mistakes. In 2026, Imbue shifted toward smaller teams shipping multiple open software projects, building on Sculptor’s release and continued use.

Founded in 2021 by CEO Kanjun Qiu and CTO Josh Albrecht, the company was previously called Generally Intelligent. Its research connects agent development with methods for improving reasoning and experimentation. Catalyst, released in 2026, is an experimental computational research tool that helps optimize code, algorithms, and models against measurable goals. It maintains competing interpretations of experiments, shares results among them, and evaluates candidate solutions—an approach designed to help research agents reconsider assumptions instead of repeatedly pursuing a dead end.

Imbue announced a $200 million Series B in 2023. Its software distribution includes open-source tools: Sculptor is available for macOS and Linux, while Latchkey and mngr provide command-line interfaces. Catalyst is released under AGPL-3.0, and users can share research templates through its community repository.

Separate new defects from existing problems

Albrecht describes defect detection using linters, tests, and LLM analysis, with examples including race conditions, exposed API keys, and automatic repairs. Distinguishing newly introduced lint errors from existing problems makes the review specific to the generated changes.
