Incubator for Artificial Intelligence (i.AI)

The Incubator for Artificial Intelligence (i.AI) builds AI tools for UK government teams. Consult identifies themes across public consultation responses and maps individual responses to them, helping analysts focus on interpretation. Access was waitlisted in 2026, with a full cross-government rollout planned for 2027. Lex indexes legislation, explanatory notes, amendments and case law, making those materials searchable through an OpenAPI backend and an MCP server.

Created by No10 to apply AI for public good, i.AI now operates within the Government Digital Service, part of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). It joined CDDO, the Geospatial Commission and GDS in the merger that formed the new GDS. Its reusable software includes ThemeFinder, a Python package that uses language-model prompts to generate, consolidate and map themes in survey responses. ThemeFinder remains an incubation project, with critical use cases explicitly discouraged.

Its work also provides foundations for departmental services. By July 2026, i.AI’s Minute transcription and meeting-notes tool had been piloted with 22 councils using real case data. MHCLG is building on that work with Local Transcribe, developed in partnership with i.AI and initially focused on housing. The service is designed to turn conversations into transcripts, summaries and draft case notes for officers to review and edit.
