Midjourney develops AI tools for creating and editing images from text prompts and visual references. Available through its website and Discord, Midjourney helps artists explore ideas and generate variations before committing to a finished design. Its experimental V8.2 image editing model supports instruction-based changes, up to four reference images, edits to selected regions, and expansion beyond an image’s original boundaries.

Founded by CEO David Holz, who previously built gesture-tracking company Leap Motion, Midjourney publicly launched as a Discord bot in 2022. Patchwork extends this approach to collaborative worldbuilding: users create characters, describe scenes, and connect elements on a shared infinite canvas.

Midjourney earns revenue through tiered subscriptions differentiated by GPU time, concurrent jobs, and privacy controls. Its Discord community exceeded 21 million members in May 2025. In 2026, Midjourney acquired Co-Star, bringing its team into the organization to help build product and design capabilities while leaving Co-Star under its founder’s control and direction.
