Mozilla builds Firefox, Thunderbird and open-source AI tools within a nonprofit-backed family of organizations. Its products span web browsing, productivity and AI infrastructure, while its foundation supports public-interest technology through research, advocacy and philanthropy. For organizations adopting AI, Thunderbolt, launched by Mozilla subsidiary MZLA in 2026, provides an open-source client designed to give them ownership of their data and AI infrastructure. The Mozilla Foundation owns and controls the family’s commercial businesses, connecting product development and commercial income to its nonprofit purposes.

Brendan Eich and Mitchell Baker co-founded the Mozilla Project in 1998 and the Mozilla Foundation in 2003. Today, Mark Surman is Mozilla’s president, and Anthony Enzor-DeMeo leads Mozilla Corporation as CEO. Mozilla’s engineering contributions include Rust and the experimental Servo browser engine, which explored parallel execution of browser operations. Servo’s parallel styling engine, Stylo, entered Firefox through Project Quantum in 2017; its GPU-based WebRender subsequently contributed rendering improvements. Servo moved to the Linux Foundation in 2020.

In its 2025 report, Mozilla reported approximately 200 million monthly Firefox users and 20 million monthly Thunderbird users. It listed roughly $1.4 billion in reserves, no debt and more than 50 equity holdings in responsible technology companies. Firefox-related income totaled $658.5 million in 2024, supporting the financial scale behind its product and public-interest work.
