New Computer developed Dot, a personal AI companion offered through an iOS app for reflective conversation and personalized guidance. Users could communicate through text or voice, seeking career advice, recommendations, or help thinking through everyday challenges. Designed for young adults navigating uncertainty, Dot used long-term memory to adapt its responses as conversations accumulated. The app offered free usage and a paid subscription tier.

Co-founders Jason Yuan, a former Apple designer, and Samantha Whitmore, who served as CEO, built Dot around an evolving understanding of each user. Its agentic memory system created structured memories before retrieval, attaching status and date fields that could help answer questions about unfinished tasks or upcoming plans. Retrieval combined semantic search, keyword methods, and metadata filters. Integration with Hume’s Expression Measurement API added vocal-emotion signals to the context retained in memory, extending personalization beyond transcribed words.

New Computer announced its wind-down in September 2025, including the closure of Dot. After exploring an expansion from personal to social intelligence, the founders said their visions had diverged and chose to end operations. The notice set October 5, 2025 as Dot’s service endpoint and offered users data export beforehand.
