Business intelligence and AI analytics

Omni Analytics

Omni Analytics builds a business intelligence platform for data teams and business users to explore company data through SQL, spreadsheets, dashboards, and AI chat. Its semantic layer defines metrics, relationships between data, business context, and access rules that the different interfaces share. Users can work with those definitions directly or ask the Omni Agent questions in plain language to generate queries, create charts, and assemble dashboards.

Colin Zima, Jamie Davidson, and Chris Merrick founded Omni in 2022. Zima and Davidson previously worked at Looker and Google; Merrick at Stitch and Talend. They built Omni around a problem they had seen in data teams: quick, independent analyses could produce conflicting numbers, while requiring a shared model upfront could slow exploration. The platform became commercially available on February 28, 2023, combining SQL workbook-style querying and visualization with data modeling and governance.

Omni’s model-as-you-go workflow lets users explore modeled and unmodeled data in a workbook without changing the shared model. Useful definitions can then be reviewed and promoted for others to reuse. The model is written in YAML and supports Git-based version control, with branches to isolate changes before review and merging. Queries run against data in the customer’s warehouse. For AI analysis, the agent selects fields and filters within a curated dataset called a Topic, and Omni’s query engine compiles the SQL. This gives the agent established calculations and permissions to work with rather than asking it to reconstruct business logic from raw tables.

Omni also offers embedded analytics, bringing reports and self-service analysis into customers’ own products. End users can create analyses with AI, Excel-style calculations, SQL, or point-and-click controls, while product teams reuse metric logic and business context across internal and customer-facing deployments. APIs and a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server let developers connect Omni’s querying capabilities to chatbots and other applications.
