What Does Done Even Mean? Agents and Paperclip's Liveness Model - Dotta, Paperclip

AI agent orchestration
Paperclip builds an app for managing AI agents as a team at work. Paperclip brings projects, organizational roles, goal-linked tasks and budgets into one interface, supporting work across software development, marketing, documentation and customer support triage. Users connect existing agents, assign responsibilities and monitor execution through tickets and tool-call traces. Human operators can approve agent hires, review strategy, reassign tasks and pause agents.
Co-founder Dotta is CEO of Paperclip Labs. The platform’s technical approach connects different agent runtimes through adapters, including Claude Code sessions, OpenClaw bots, scripts and HTTP webhooks. Scheduled heartbeats and task notifications activate agents, while reporting lines structure delegation. Budget controls automatically pause agents at their limits, with human overrides available; these organizational controls do not replace securing the agents themselves.
Paperclip is MIT-licensed and self-hosted, with local or remote deployment and no required Paperclip account. Local setup uses an embedded Postgres database, or users can connect their own Postgres. Its public footprint includes founders and small teams building products, games and media systems. In a March 2026 snapshot, the company counted 14,267 public Paperclip-attributed commits across 884 external repositories.

The demonstration combines CEO, CTO, and specialist agents across Codex, Claude, Gemini, and OpenClaw. Human approval of hiring plans and spending visibility provide oversight of the delegated work.
Dotta describes explicit task-state transitions, harness-agnostic watchdogs, structured completion claims, and independent cross-model review as mechanisms for balancing workflow liveness with quality control.
