Tailscale

Tailscale builds private networks that connect employees, devices, applications and workloads across existing infrastructure. Its WireGuard-based networking platform lets developers and IT teams reach databases and servers, connect AI infrastructure across clouds, and control access through existing identity providers. Teams can manage access policies as code, stream network and administrative activity to security tools, and use subnet routers to connect infrastructure where Tailscale is not installed.

Founded in 2019 by Avery Pennarun, David Carney and David Crawshaw, Tailscale is led by CEO Avery Pennarun. Its engineering approach separates centralized coordination from a distributed data network: a coordination server distributes public keys and policies, while nodes establish encrypted connections and enforce access rules. Automated NAT traversal helps devices connect across firewalls; when direct connections cannot work, its DERP relays forward encrypted traffic without decrypting it.

Tailscale acquired Border0 in 2026, extending into privileged access management with infrastructure authorization, session recording, and command and query visibility. In August 2026, its enterprise page listed 40,000+ companies and 2.5 million+ active devices. It raised US$160 million in Series C funding led by Accel in 2025, following its US$100 million Series B in 2022.
