Grocery retail, wholesale and retail technology

Tesco

Tesco is a British grocery and general-merchandise retailer serving customers through stores, online shopping and Tesco Whoosh rapid delivery. Its wider offering includes F&F clothing, pharmacies and Tesco Mobile, while Booker supplies retailers and caterers. Clubcard connects shopping with member prices, personalised coupons and rewards, extending the relationship beyond individual purchases.

Jack Cohen founded Tesco in 1919, selling surplus groceries from a market stall in Hackney, London; Ken Murphy is its current chief executive. Tesco introduced Clubcard in 1995. Its engineering work applies data science to personalised search and recommendations, home-delivery scheduling, truck routing and markdown pricing. The company develops these algorithms within product teams and uses online and physical-store experiments to measure their effects.

Tesco also earns advertising income through Tesco Media, which the company reported was used by over 800 brands in its 2025/26 results. Its audience-prediction tools identify customers at risk of moving away from a brand, while dunnhumby develops AI tools to adapt product ranges to local tastes. Tesco completed the sale of its banking operations to Barclays in November 2024, beginning an exclusive ten-year partnership for Tesco-branded banking products. It retained insurance and money services, including ATMs and travel money.
