Cloud communications and customer engagement

Twilio

Twilio provides cloud communications infrastructure that developers and businesses use to build customer interactions into applications. Its APIs let software make and receive phone calls and exchange text messages. Twilio SendGrid supports transactional and marketing email, while Twilio Email brings SendGrid technology into cross-channel workflows. Its conversational AI capabilities include Conversation Memory, which maintains customer history and conversation state, and Conversation Orchestrator, which manages routing, escalation, and handoffs between people and AI agents.

Founded in 2008 by Jeff Lawson, John Wolthuis, and Evan Cooke, Twilio set out to simplify telecommunications and bring communications to the cloud. Khozema Shipchandler is its current CEO. A lasting technical building block is TwiML, its XML instruction language: Twilio requests instructions from an application's URL to determine how to handle a call, including playing messages, recording audio, or collecting keypad input.

Twilio also lets businesses connect their own AI agents and models to voice and messaging through Agent Connect, a self-hosted, model-agnostic framework. Developers can switch models without changing their Twilio channel integration or application wiring. Its customer base spans startups and Fortune 500 companies; Twilio reported more than 400,000 active customer accounts as of September 30, 2025.
