UC Berkeley

UC Berkeley is a public research university combining undergraduate, graduate and professional education with research. Its planned Master of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, scheduled to begin in fall 2027, will prepare STEM graduates to create, improve and responsibly deploy AI systems.

Founded in 1868 through the merger of the College of California and a state agricultural and mechanical arts college, the university is now led by Chancellor Richard K. Lyons. Henry Durant founded its predecessor academy and became the university’s first president in 1870. Berkeley’s computing contributions include RISC-V, which began in its Parallel Computing Laboratory in 2010. The open, royalty-free instruction set provides a standard on which developers can build their own processor implementations, including for proprietary products.

Berkeley reported fall 2025 enrollment of 33,122 undergraduates and 13,029 graduate students. Its research draws support from government, nonprofit and industry sponsors: FY2025 research awards totaled $965 million, measured on a project-period basis.
