Distributed SQL databases and AI data infrastructure

Yugabyte

Yugabyte builds YugabyteDB, an open-source distributed SQL database for business-critical transactional applications. Its users include financial services, payments, retail and e-commerce companies: Mindgate uses it for payments infrastructure, while Tokopedia uses it to expand database capacity and change schemas during business hours. Developers can use YugabyteDB Aeon as a managed service or operate the database themselves, including through YugabyteDB Anywhere on cloud, on-premises and hybrid infrastructure.

Founded in 2016 by former Facebook engineers Kannan Muthukkaruppan, Karthik Ranganathan and Mikhail Bautin, Yugabyte draws on its founders’ experience building and operating Cassandra and HBase. YugabyteDB combines a query layer that reuses PostgreSQL code with distributed storage. It splits tables into smaller pieces called tablets, distributes them across servers and automatically splits growing tablets and rebalances the cluster. Applications still address each SQL table as one logical unit. This architecture supports horizontal growth and geographic distribution while retaining relational features such as joins, foreign keys and distributed transactions.

For AI applications, YugabyteDB supports pgvector to store embeddings and perform vector similarity searches alongside transactional data. Its 2026.1 release adds YugabyteDB AMP, which gives each agent an isolated PostgreSQL database while sharing the underlying distributed infrastructure. Yugabyte also offers Meko, data infrastructure for developers building multi-agent applications. Meko lets agents resume context across sessions and promote private memories into shared data packs, addressing how useful context moves between agents rather than remaining confined to one agent’s session.
