AI Agent Memory Infrastructure
Zep builds persistent memory for AI agents, turning conversations, business data, and user interactions into context that developers can retrieve for personalized responses. Its Context Lake manages context graphs with access controls, retention policies, and provenance linking facts to their sources. Enterprises and AI startups can use its managed service or deploy inside their own cloud. Beneath the platform, Konig stores separate graphs for users, teams, or projects, keeping active graphs in memory and moving inactive ones to object storage.
Founded in 2023 and led by founder and CEO Daniel Chalef, Zep develops Graphiti, its open-source temporal knowledge graph framework. Graphiti incrementally incorporates new information while preserving historical relationships, helping agents distinguish current facts from earlier states. Zep’s 2025 research paper describes how this approach combines conversational and structured business data. In 2025, Zep ended maintenance and releases of Zep Community Edition, concentrating open-source development on Graphiti while continuing its commercial service.
Zep participated in Y Combinator’s Winter 2024 batch. As of August 2026, the company described itself as seed-stage and reported 240+ customers, including Fortune 500 companies, and 24,000+ GitHub stars for Graphiti.

Chalef argues that semantic similarity can surface irrelevant facts. His finance-coach demonstration uses typed business schemas and node-type filtering to make memory retrieval more selective.
The provenance talk examines how entity merging and fact synthesis complicate source lineage. Episode-linked provenance, metadata tagging, and temporal invalidation provide mechanisms for debugging and managing changing information.
Affiliations reflect each recorded session, not necessarily current employment. The memory masterclass is a shared workshop led by Mark Bain, with Daniel Chalef among the guest presenters.
