Open AI research and independent AI publishing

Allen Institute for AI (Ai2); Interconnects.ai

The Allen Institute for AI (Ai2) develops open AI models and research tools that researchers and developers can inspect, adapt and deploy. Its products include Olmo language models, Molmo multimodal models, OlmoEarth for Earth observation and AstaBench for evaluating scientific research agents. Its robotics models integrate with LeRobot, allowing users to fine-tune, evaluate and deploy them on physical hardware. In August 2026, Ai2 reported more than 50 million downloads of its models and datasets on Hugging Face since spring 2024.

Founded by Paul Allen in 2014, the Seattle nonprofit is led by interim CEO Peter Clark. Ai2 publishes training data, intermediate checkpoints, evaluations and methods alongside model weights, enabling researchers to reproduce experiments and investigate how models were built. Its engineering contributions include Olmo Hybrid, which combines transformer attention with linear recurrent layers, and MolmoPoint, which grounds spatial outputs directly in visual features rather than generating text coordinates.

Interconnects is a separate publication founded and operated by Nathan Lambert, who departed Ai2 in June 2026. It explains AI models and training methods through essays, model reviews, researcher interviews and audio editions. Paid subscriptions support its operations and provide additional essays, model roundups and community access. In June 2026, Lambert reported more than 70,000 subscribers, including approximately 900 paid subscribers.

The compute demands of reasoning

Lambert connects reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards and inference-time scaling to agent applications, while examining token costs and the possibility that post-training compute approaches pre-training compute.
