AI agent development and workflow automation

AutoGPT

AutoGPT builds software for creating and running AI agents that automate workflows across business tools. The AutoGPT Platform serves technical and nontechnical users: AutoPilot turns plain-English requests into agents, while a visual builder lets users connect and inspect individual steps. A marketplace supplies agents to customize, and a dashboard tracks runs, costs and actions needing attention. Teams can automate account research, campaign drafts, incident triage and recurring reports. Agents run on demand, on schedules or from triggers; users can choose paid managed hosting or operate the software on their own infrastructure.

Toran Bruce Richards, AutoGPT’s founder and CEO, created the original standalone agent project. A venture-backed company formed around the project in 2023, hiring most of its maintainers. The subsequent platform expresses agents as composable workflows: action blocks connect external services, AI models, scripts and conditional logic. This design supports branching processes that combine AI tasks with conventional automation. The original agent remains available as AutoGPT Classic, alongside Forge for building agents and agbenchmark for testing them.

By August 2026, AutoGPT’s repository had approximately 186,900 GitHub stars and 46,000 forks. The business received a reported $12 million in funding in 2023, with Redpoint among its investors. Its hosted service charges for plans and agent usage; self-hosted deployments incur users’ own infrastructure and model costs.
