Automattic builds software for publishing, commerce, and messaging. WordPress.com provides hosted websites and blogs, while WooCommerce turns WordPress sites into stores selling physical goods, downloads, and subscriptions. Jetpack adds backups, malware scanning, analytics, and performance tools to self-hosted sites; WordPress VIP supplies enterprise hosting, security, and content analytics. Its broader portfolio includes Tumblr and the Beeper messaging app. For developers, its AI infrastructure connects agents to WordPress and WooCommerce through standardized protocols, while writers can generate and refine copy directly within WordPress.

Founded in 2005 by current CEO Matt Mullenweg, Automattic contributes to the independently maintained WordPress open-source project. Its engineering work includes funding and developing WordPress core and the Gutenberg block editor. In 2015, it open-sourced Calypso, a JavaScript interface powered by APIs that reworked WordPress.com administration. The same HTML, CSS, and JavaScript code also supported desktop applications through Electron, extending the interface beyond the browser.

Automattic remains privately held and independent. As of August 2026, the company reported that WordPress VIP served over 700 enterprises. Automattic has operated as a fully distributed company since its founding.
