AI coding agents and developer tools

Cline

Cline builds an open-source AI coding agent that helps developers understand repositories, edit multiple files, run terminal commands, and automate engineering workflows. It offers editor integrations, a CLI for interactive work and automated pipelines, and Cline SDK for embedding agents in other products. Developers can choose hosted models or local runtimes, plan changes before execution, and approve individual actions or enable automatic approval. Cline Teams adds organization administration, centralized billing, and usage tracking.

Founded in 2024 by current CEO Saoud Rizwan, Cline began as a VS Code extension. Its engineering approach separates a reusable agent loop from a durable runtime and product interfaces, allowing sessions to move between interfaces and work to survive UI restarts. The SDK supports custom tools, plugins, and agent teams. Cline also publishes evaluation traces and methods for open-weight coding agents, examining tradeoffs between task success, token efficiency, and cost rather than treating benchmark scores as the only objective.

In August 2026, the company reported 8 million-plus installs across platforms. Cline announced $32 million in combined seed and Series A funding in 2025, with Emergence Capital leading the Series A. Sacra estimated annual recurring revenue at $5 million in August 2025.

Messages from the stage

Simpler agents, stronger foundations

Ara Khan advocates simpler prompts and architectures as agents progress toward Kanban workflows and cloud deployment. Nik Pash argues that stronger models and difficult training environments matter more than elaborate scaffolding or incremental agent tuning.

Benchmark results depend on their setup

Ara Khan treats evaluations as necessary but imperfect measurements, showing how Linux environments, resource configuration, and model-specific harnesses affect coding-agent results.

Open source and developer control

Saoud Rizwan connects maintainer overload and supply-chain compromises with a broader argument for auditable agents, open-weight models, and competing inference providers.
