Global payments and industry-specific software

Flywire

Flywire combines a global payment network with industry-specific software for large, complex domestic and cross-border transactions. Universities use it to collect tuition, hospitals to manage patient bills, travel businesses to collect bookings and pay suppliers, and businesses to automate billing and receivables. Its defining approach embeds payments into the work surrounding them: a university’s tuition collection or a hotel’s booking process. Integrations with systems such as NetSuite connect payment collection to existing financial operations. Flywire’s industry overview describes these uses across education, healthcare, travel and B2B.

The business grew from founder Iker Marcaide’s difficulty paying tuition internationally, including a payment that nearly went missing between banks. Initially called peerTransfer, the company began with educational institutions before expanding into other industries. Its 2025 acquisition of Sertifi extended that model into hotel operations. Sertifi connects contracts, payment details and completed payments with hotel property-management and events systems, bringing the surrounding hospitality workflow into the payment process.

Flywire also builds Orbit, an internal platform that puts AI model steps inside deterministic engineering workflows. Engineers define workflows in YAML, review them through merge requests and specify the tools and access each step receives. Predictable operations remain in code while models handle judgment tasks such as code review and ticket triage. One code-review workflow lets the model read code without modifying it, with human merge-request review retained. Orbit illustrates Flywire’s use of AI within its own engineering operations.
