Google DeepMind

Google DeepMind develops AI models and applications for consumers, developers, businesses and scientists. Its Gemini models power an assistant app and capabilities across Google Search and Cloud. The Gemini app lets people work with voice, camera feeds and screen sharing, while small businesses can create images, video and audio for marketing. Gemma offers open models small enough to run on local devices, and AlphaFold helps scientists predict molecular structures and interactions.

DeepMind was founded in 2010 by Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg and Mustafa Suleyman; Google DeepMind brings together DeepMind and Google Brain. In August 2026, Hassabis became Chair of Google DeepMind and Alphabet Chief Scientist, with Koray Kavukcuoglu taking operational leadership as SVP of Google DeepMind. Its research includes DQN, which combined deep learning and reinforcement learning to learn Atari games from pixels and scores, and AlphaFold 2, which predicts protein structures from amino acid sequences.

The organization connects research with both mass-market applications and scientific infrastructure. Google reported that the Gemini app surpassed 1 billion monthly users in August 2026. The freely available AlphaFold Protein Database, launched with EMBL-EBI in 2021, expanded to more than 200 million predicted structures in 2022. By November 2025, DeepMind reported that it had been used by over 3 million researchers across more than 190 countries.
