Google Photos

Google Photos is Google’s photo and video service for backing up, organizing, searching, editing and sharing personal libraries. Available on Android, iOS and the web, it helps people find memories by person, place or subject and share albums with contacts who do not use the app. Magic Eraser removes distractions, Photo Unblur sharpens blurry images, and the Create tab offers collages, photo styling and image-to-video tools.

Launched as a standalone Google product in 2015, Photos grew out of work by creator David Lieb’s team following Google’s acquisition of Bump. Anil Sabharwal headed Photos at launch; today, Vice President Shimrit Ben-Yair leads Photos, Google One and AI Subscriptions. Automatic grouping by people, places and things reduced the need for manual tagging from the outset. Its Auto frame engineering combines 3D scene and camera estimation with generative inpainting, enabling changes to perspective in eligible photos containing people rather than simply cropping an image.

In 2025, Google reported more than 1.5 billion monthly users and over 9 trillion stored photos and videos, with 210 million people editing photos each month. Each Google Account includes 15 GB of storage shared across Photos, Gmail and Drive; Google One memberships provide additional storage.
