Heroku

Heroku is Salesforce’s container-based cloud platform for developers to deploy, manage, and scale applications without maintaining servers. It serves startups and enterprises, combining application hosting with managed data services: Heroku Postgres, Heroku Key-Value Store, and Apache Kafka on Heroku. Heroku Connect synchronizes Salesforce and Postgres data bidirectionally, letting developers read and write Salesforce data through SQL. Customers can scale resources and pay for what they consume.

Founded in 2007 by Orion Henry, James Lindenbaum, and Adam Wiggins, Heroku became part of Salesforce through an acquisition completed in 2011. Keshav Pokkuluri heads product and engineering. Wiggins authored the Twelve-Factor App methodology, which codifies cloud application practices such as explicit dependencies, environment-based configuration, and treating backing services as attached resources. Heroku opened the definition to community maintenance in 2024.

Heroku moved to sustaining engineering in 2026, emphasizing stability, security, reliability, and support while continuing releases consistent with those goals. The platform remains operational and supported for new and existing credit-card customers. It no longer offers Enterprise Account contracts to new customers; existing enterprise subscriptions and support contracts remain honored and can renew.
