AI software engineering agents and cloud development environments

Ona

Ona provides cloud workspaces and background AI agents that help engineering teams delegate software development tasks. Ona Environments supply sandboxed machines with project dependencies, tools, and connectivity, while Ona Agents let developers scope work, delegate tasks in parallel, and review changes through a conversational interface or VS Code. Teams can use Ona’s cloud or deploy in their own infrastructure. Enterprise controls include permissions, scoped access, and audit trails, supporting workflows such as vulnerability remediation, code modernization, and pull request review.

Formerly Gitpod, the company adopted the Ona name in 2025 as it expanded from cloud development environments into software engineering agents. Johannes Landgraf is CEO and co-founder; Christian Weichel is CTO and co-founder. Its engineering approach gives each agent a virtual machine with a dedicated kernel. Veto, introduced in early access in 2026, adds kernel-level enforcement at the process execution gate: policy checks occur within the same system call as execution, placing enforcement below application-level agent controls.

At the 2025 rebrand, the company reported that its cloud development environments had been used by 2 million developers. OpenAI’s acquisition of Ona closed on August 10, 2026, bringing the company into the Codex team with its customer-controlled environments, agent orchestration, and runtime security technology.
