Audio streaming and developer tools

Spotify

Spotify is an audio streaming service for discovering and listening to music, podcasts and audiobooks. As of August 2026, its catalog spanned over 100 million tracks, 7 million podcast titles and 700,000 audiobooks across 184 markets. Personalized discovery includes Discover Weekly, while collaborative listening features such as Jam let listeners share the experience. Eligible Premium users can also type or speak requests in the mobile app to choose what plays, explore their listening history and learn about music, podcasts and books.

Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon founded Spotify in 2006, and the service launched in 2008. Alex Norström and Gustav Söderström became co-CEOs in January 2026, with Ek moving to Executive Chairman. Beyond its consumer service, Spotify developed Backstage, a framework for building internal developer portals, and open-sourced it in 2020. It brings fragmented engineering tools into a centralized platform to help teams manage dependencies, reduce context switching and coordinate software development.

For Q2 2026, the company reported 777 million monthly active users and 300 million Premium subscribers. Spotify also sells developer productivity tools and support to businesses. Its Spotify Portal for Backstage provides a software-as-a-service offering with a no-code interface for installing and managing plugins. In 2025, Spotify reported that more than 3,000 companies had adopted the underlying Backstage framework.
