Tesla Optimus
Tesla develops Optimus, a humanoid robot intended to perform physical tasks in factories and, eventually, homes. The program sits within Tesla rather than operating as a separate company. Demonstrated capabilities include walking, balancing, picking up objects and sorting them. Its broader goal is a general-purpose autonomous robot; Tesla’s second-quarter 2026 filing describes ongoing development and preparations for large-scale production.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk introduced the concept in 2021, followed by a working prototype in 2022. Optimus shares Tesla’s end-to-end AI approach for driving: visual inputs are translated into control actions. Its humanlike form is intended to let it learn from people performing tasks. Tesla’s training approach combines human demonstrations, including factory work, with plans for robots to practice tasks and learn from successes and failures through reinforcement learning.
Manufacturing remains a substantial part of the program’s development. In July 2026, Tesla described installing Optimus production lines in Fremont’s former Model S and Model X manufacturing space, while anticipating a slow initial ramp. Omdia estimated that Tesla shipped fewer than 500 general-purpose embodied intelligent robots in 2025.
