Founded in 2019 by former Stripe colleagues Christian Anderson, Taylor Francis, and Avi Itskovich, Watershed is led by CEO Anderson. Its acquisition of VitalMetrics in 2023 brought CEDA, an annually updated emissions model spanning 148 countries, into the platform. Watershed also publishes measurement research: its 2026 open AI-emissions framework accounts for model training, inference, data-center overhead, and embodied hardware. It expresses emissions per million tokens and offers three calculation tiers based on data quality, giving businesses a structured way to estimate the footprint of corporate AI use.

In 2026, the company reported serving more than 90 Fortune 500 companies, with approximately 4 gigatonnes of emissions under management. Watershed raised $100 million in Series C funding in 2024 at a $1.8 billion valuation, in a round led by Greenoaks with participation from Kleiner Perkins, Sequoia, and other existing investors.
