Building safe Payment Infrastructure for the autonomous economy

Payments and financial infrastructure
Stripe builds financial infrastructure that businesses use to accept payments online and in person, manage billing, and embed payments in their platforms. Its Revenue suite includes Stripe Billing, Invoicing and Tax, supporting subscriptions and usage-based business models. Developers can integrate through APIs and SDKs, while businesses can also use dashboard tools without writing code. Its Agentic Commerce Suite lets merchants sell across multiple AI interfaces and protocols through a single integration.
Cofounded by Patrick Collison and John Collison, Stripe is led by Patrick Collison as CEO and has dual headquarters in San Francisco and Dublin. Its engineering contributions include Sorbet, a gradual static type checker for Ruby built at Stripe. Developers can add types one file at a time while retaining their existing Ruby toolchain; editor features include autocomplete and navigation to definitions.
In its 2026 annual update, Stripe reported serving more than 5 million businesses directly or through platforms, with $1.9 trillion in total payment volume in 2025. Its work on AI commerce also extends to infrastructure costs: in August 2026, Stripe announced an agreement to acquire OpenRouter, whose platform routes requests across more than 400 models from over 80 providers using criteria including task complexity, price, speed and reliability.

Kaliski separates nondeterministic agent discovery from deterministic credentials, checkout, and payments. His demonstrations connect spending controls and shared payment tokens with Stripe PaymentIntents.
Pant uses Gamma and Intercom examples to argue for billing units tied to customer-perceived value and measurable outcomes. Hybrid subscription-plus-usage pricing addresses the tension between adoption and protecting margins.
