PayPal provides digital payment services for consumers and businesses to move money, shop and sell. Shoppers can pay from account balances, bank accounts or credit cards without sharing financial information with sellers. Agent Ready connects Braintree merchants to AI shopping assistants. For ChatGPT integrations, customers authorize PayPal as their payment method, and the merchant’s application receives a delegated token to process the transaction through Braintree. Google AI Mode and Gemini integrations instead use Google Wallet and a single-use Google Pay payment token, also processed through Braintree.

Founded in 1998, PayPal launched email payments in 1999, when its business on eBay began. X.com and Confinity merged in 2000, and eBay acquired PayPal in 2002. PayPal added VeriSign’s payment gateway business to its merchant services platform in 2005. PayPal Holdings is led by president and CEO Enrique Lores; its business includes branded checkout, Venmo, Braintree and financial services.

Store Sync extends AI commerce beyond payment acceptance: merchants connect catalogs and commerce APIs so assistants can discover products, manage carts and complete purchases within conversational interfaces. Orders flow into merchants’ existing order management systems. Eligibility is limited to physical goods sold to US-based customers in USD, excluding digital goods and subscriptions. Across its broader payments business, PayPal serves approximately 200 markets and reported 439 million active accounts at the end of June 2026.
